Red Trillum

This beloved native wildflower bloom is an artistic beauty in bloom with three maroon petals in an appealing triangular shape. The leaves are in threes too, appearing just below the blooms. This particular variety is one of the hardiest, and it's very easy to grow in both alkaline and acidic soils. It's useful for easy naturalizing, and because it thrives in wet soil, so it makes a beautiful feature along a floodplain or a stream. The blooms last up to three weeks in late spring, followed by little berrylike fruits that birds enjoy. There is an odor to Red Trillium, sometimes called Stinking Benjamin, which draws pollinators like carrion flies and beetles. It's a short plant, though, and you'd likely have to go out of your way to catch a whiff. Deer aren't much for the smell either, and tend not to eat Red Trillium. Trillium erectum 'Red'
